Phelsuma are a genus of day gecko named by the British zoologist John Edward Gray, who named it after the Dutch physician Murk van Phelsum. These geckos inhabit the islands of the south-west part of the Indian Ocean. They range from 4 inches in length all the way to a whole 12 inches! They're diurnal and arboreal. Diurnal means they're mainly awake during the day and sleep at night. Arboreal means they're tree dwellers. Most species are bright blues and greens with gorgeous markings splattered across their bodies. They've definitely gained a reputation amongst reptile keepers for their beautiful colors and have become quite the popular pet because of this. Unfortunately, their handleability is very poor. It's pretty well known that geckos of many kinds drop their tails as a defence mechanism and these geckos are no exception. On top of that, their skin just...falls off if they feel threatened as to not be captured. Owners know this and when these little escape artist's escape their tanks, owners tend to get containters to trap them back in without handling them. Food is very easy to obtain for them, one can usually get it at your local pet store no problem. These creatures are simply delightful and have the friendliest faces as well. Precious little souls they are.
